Youth of the Year
Youth of the Year is BGCA's premier recognition program for Club members, promoting service to Club, community and family; academic success; strong moral character; life goals; and poise and public speaking
Local Clubs recognize members ages 14 to 18 as Youth of the Month winners and select a Youth of the Year, who then participates in state competitions. State winners each receive a $1,000 scholarship and participate in regional competitions. Five regional winners each receive a $10,000 scholarship and compete on the national level. The National Youth of the Year receives up to an additional $50,000 scholarship and is installed by the President of the United States.
The Boys & Girls Club of West Central WI's youth of the year is Ray Travis.
Ray's service to the club is ranks on the top of his achievements. Ray has been with the Baraboo Boys and Girls Club for over 8 years and continues to make major contributions. Some of his contributions include participating in fundraisers such as "Fair on the Square" and events that support the Club. His two major influences, however, have been through the Junior Staff and Boxing program. As one of the only male Junior Staff members Ray was able to make major contributions to the club throughout the summer by completing over 80 hours of Junior Staff time helping out in all areas of the club, including helping members with summer school homework, gym activities, and art activities. The staff witnessed a major transformation of Ray through the Junior Staff program where he demonstrated a desire to learn more about what it is like for Club professionals and how to better work with younger members. Ray became and still is a huge mentor for many Club members.
